HEADLINER TO BE ANNOUNCED!

On Tuesday 12th January 2010, Haiti was struck by an earthquake so devastating it flattened almost 90% of capital’s buildings and sent tremors through 5 neighbouring countries.

This was followed by 33 aftershocks more powerful than an atomic bomb. Thousands of people were instantly trapped under collapsed structures. Telephone lines were so severely damaged that communications were futile. Hospitals, medical facilities, the UN headquarters, and local police and fire stations have all been reduced to rubble, making immediate rescue nigh on impossible. The main harbour’s port has collapsed, the airport’s control tower cannot operate, and debris is blocking main roads; meaning aid from other countries is slow to arrive and difficult to transport.

To add to the chaos, the collapse of the prisons has set hundreds of convicted criminals free, many of whom are still unaccounted for. Panic and hunger has led to widespread looting and in the absence of jails, police are reacting with firepower. Thousands of children have been left orphaned, homeless, and incredibly vulnerable. The current death toll is 200,000, and bodies are beginning to line the streets.
The Red Cross have estimated over 3 million people have been affected by this catastrophe. Rebuilding Haiti from the bottom up, including their streets, their government and their families is a project that will take decades of effort and billions of pounds.

Yet it is not impossible. Reports of Haitian people marching together through the streets; clapping, singing, supporting others and spreading hope come thick and fast.

Over $462 million of donations have been raised so far, and pledges are still coming in.

Over 31 charities, 18 countries, and 90 corporations have mobilised to send aid and donate money- and it is time for the musical community of Leeds to do the same, the best way they know how!

Hands Up For Haiti will be an incredible night from your favourite masters of music. We aim to provide you with stellar sets from the most reputable events in town; who have come together to spread love, show solidarity and raise some serious money for a desperate cause.

Subdub, Vagabondz, New Bohemia, Hang the DJ, Winston’s Garden, and Bigger Than Barry are just some of the heavyweights who’ll be spinning in the name of the human. And we have a few surprises left to spring.

Get Involved. On Friday 5th February all roads led to The Faversham. For a minimum donation on the door of £5, we will provide an epic soundtrack to a night that’s all about the people uniting in the face of disaster. Show your support for your fellow (wo)man in crisis- no matter how far away they maybe!
